Flip Book/Photoshop Gif

|
In order to make this animation in the form of a flip book. I simply drew lines along the pages to mark the proportions of where each part of the body would start. I then drew my character in several different positions: Contact, Recoil, passing and high point. I drew a total of 8 frames which when played together make an animation of my character walking. If i flipped it at the right speed, it worked well. although, if I done it too fast or slow, it seemed unrealistic. Some parts of my animation are jumpy, so if i were to do it again, I would try and improve it by making sure the pictures flowed well together.
After making this flip book, I took pictures of each frame and loaded them into a stack in photoshop which creates a different layer for each frame. I then controlled the layers using the animation setting in photoshop. After organising the frames into order, I exported the animation as a Gif.

Zeotrope Strip

This animation was made using a Zeotrope. In order to achieve this, I simply made the zeotrope by cutting slits in the paper and drawing in the inside of the paper, a bouncing ball. This came out quite successful, although, I believe I could have made the animation more visible by making the slits in the paper thicker. I feel that the animation could have been smoother as well, I could have done this by using tracing paper so that the animation is seamless.
Flash animation
I made this animation by using Adobe Flash. I made each individual body part using photoshop and images off of the internet, I then used motion tweens and keyframes to move the body parts. This kind of animating is very useful as it allows me to undo any mistakes that I have made by the click of a button, opposed to the Zeotrope as if i was to make a mistake while cutting or drawing I may have to start again.
4 Pioneers
The Lumiere Brothers
French inventors and pioneer manufacturers of photographic equipment who devised an early motion-picture camera and projector called the Cinématographe. They were born in Besancon, France in 1862. They soon moved to Lyon in 1870 so they could attend La Martiniere, which was the largest technical school in Lyon. William Horner
Horner was the inventor of the 'Zeotrope' which he had originally named it a Daedalum ("wheel of the Devil"). It was based on Plateau's phenakistoscope, but did not require a viewing mirror and allowed more than one person to use it at the same time. The zeotrope became forgotten until 1867, when it became patented in England by M. Bradley, and in America by William F. Lincoln. Lincoln renamed the Daedalum, giving it the name of "zoetrope," or "wheel of life." Émile Reynaud
Reynaud was a French science teacher, responsible for the first projected animated cartoon films. This was achieved through his invention of the 'Praxinoscope' in 1877 which was the predecessor of the Zeotrope. He then invented the Théâtre Optique which was an improvement of the Praxinoscope. On 28 October 1892 he projected the first animated film in public. Joseph Plateau Plateau was a Belgian physicist and in 1832 he invented the phenakistoscope. It was also invented in the same year by Simon von Stampfer of Vienna who lived in Austria who called it invention a stroboscope. The phenakistoscope works by rotating disks with repeating drawn images in small increments of motion on one and regularly spaced slits in the other. |
5 Examples of 2D animation
This animation is more of a piece of art than a short film for entertainment. It consists of two drawn dancers dancing together gracefully. The animation is very realistic and smooth. The artist rotoscoped over dancing choreographers in order to create the realistic and smooth animation. This animation is running at 24 frames per second. This is also what contributes towards the smoothness of the animation. The artist has also included drawn particle effects coming off of the characters which makes gives the animation more depth and something more than just a normal video of people dancing. The style of this animation is in the style of a rough sketch, with drawings of the measurements planning of the characters as if it was a draft.
This animation has been made using flash and cut out. It is a short film for the purpose of entertainment, this is advanced as the characters have mouth that moves to the words that are being said. Also the pupils in the eyes move and the eyebrows. This makes the animation very smooth and realistic. Especially compared to my flash animation.
This animation is using flash and the characters seem to be flat and drawn like cartoons. This animation seems to be using parallax which gives the animation a very realistic appearance while maintaining the comic effect of the drawings. This animation also includes CGI such as made up creatures carrying the Beatles along. The animation is very smooth, which suggests that the created used a high fps.
This animation appears to be cutout animation. I also can see some uses of pixilation in this which isnt 2d animation. The animation makes it seem as if the objects are shadows, when there are actually just black paper. This video is quite choppy so I assume that the fps is low. Also this film is quite old which means that the technology available limits the quality that they are about to produce.
This animation has probably been created in flash. I believe this as the characters and environments look as if they have been made on a computer. Also the fps seem very high, which suggests this could have been made on a computer.

Gantt Chart
This gantt chart will help me manage my time with my projects as it organises what order I have to do things in, how long it should take and gives me a target to aim for. For example, I have got to start by Brainstorming my ideas. I have predicted this to take three days.
Brainstorm of ideas
Proposal
For our project, we came up with a number of ideas. We began thinking about possibly a horse running, we then thought that this would be too hard, so we decided to do an animation of a human doing an activity or hobby. For example a person on a skateboard, martial arts or a person playing guitar. We have finally come to a final proposal to make an animation of someone playing the guitar. The genre of our animation will be indie, this is because it revolves around music and instruments. This animation will be for entertainment and our target audience is young music lovers of any gender. We plan to make this animation by recording footage beforehand and rotoscoping onto a computer. We have decided to make our animation 6 frames per second, for a 30 second animation, this means that there will be 180 frames in total. We will split the drawing between us, so that we draw 90 frames each. We are going to organise this so that each of us draws every other frame, for example One draws 1, 3, 5, 7 and the other draws 2, 4, 6, 8. This is because if one of us drew frames 1 to 90 and the other drew 90 to 180, there may be an obvious change that makes the animation look unprofessional. Because our animation revolves around music, we plan to record the guitar playing and overlay the audio over the animation.

Footage
This is our footage that we plan to rotoscope.
Final
Evaluation
I wanted to get feedback on my animation as i felt it was important to establish improvements that coud be made to make a more polished final product. In my questionnaire, i asked about age, gender and occupation, this is so that I could find out whether I had reached my target audience for my animation. My main questions were 'Do you think the soundtrack for this animation worked well and why?', 'Do you feel the technique worked well?', 'Do you feel that the animation was the right frame rate?', 'Do you like the style?', 'Do you think that this would attract a young audience that are into music?' I feel that these questions help me establish whether or not the animation was at technical standard and whether people liked it. All of the answers were positive and everyone who filled in the questionnaire said that they thought that the soundtrack worked well which showed me that the animation was in sync. Everyone said that they thought that the technique worked well. When asked about whether the animation was at the right fram rate, with most saying it was fine but one saying it was jumpy. When asked about about whether they liked the style of the animation everybody said yes, one said that it reminded them of the aha video for 'Take me on'. When I asked whether they felt that it appealed to the target audience, they said they thought it did but not just towards young people, but to all people interested in music. I am happy with the outcome of this feedback
I feel that my overall project went well. Although the amount of time that it took to make the final animation was slightly longer than I had originally thought.
